WOMEN LAWYERS OF SACRAMENTO condemns executive order targeting lgbtq+ community
On January 20, 2025, the Trump Administration issued an Executive Order declaring a “policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female,” and requiring that all Federal agencies and employees “enforce laws governing sex-based rights, protections, opportunities, and accommodations” according to biological sex at birth, not gender identity.
This deeply troubling Executive Order attempts to erase the existence, humanity, and dignity of transgender and non-binary individuals, creating significant barriers to travel, healthcare access, and basic acknowledgment of identity.
Even here in California, the Executive Order will have immediate and tangible consequences, threatening gender-affirming health care for transgender people, proposing removal of “nonbinary” and “other” genders from federal identification documents, and seeking to roll-back resources for the transgender community. Thus, while the future impact of this Executive Order is uncertain in the face of legal challenges, the fear and anxiety among community members concerned about their safety and access to critical resources like healthcare, housing, and economic opportunity are very real.
